Are public university social media posts public records?
Public colleges and universities are government bodies in most states, and content created or received in the course of official business, including on social media, may fall under your state’s public records law. Depending on state law, that can include public comments on official accounts and content that was later edited or deleted.
How does FERPA apply to campus social media?
FERPA protects personally identifiable information from education records; not every social post or comment is itself an education record. Institutional policy and counsel determine how exposed student information should be removed, retained and disclosed. Which platforms and content are captured?
